Enhance wellness with a unique sauna experience
The experience

Discover a uniquely different sauna experience. Experience the German Aufguss ritual.

What’s Aufguss? In short, Aufugss is a 15-minute (or longer) sauna ritual led by an Aufguss Master (or masters). Aufguss originated from the need to circulate fresh air and heat in saunas. It evolved into a social experience promoting well-being, community, and entertainment. Aufguss masters pour scented water and ice onto hot stones, then circulate steam with stylized towel techniques. Experiences range from traditional (health-focused) to modern (music, lights, costumes). All engage the five senses.

Elements of Aufguss

Aufguss originated from the need to circulate fresh air and heat in saunas. It evolved into a social experience promoting well-being, community, and entertainment.

Heat
At the core of this sauna ritual is of course heat. The steam and towel-waving help heat the sauna to 190 to 200 degrees (85-95 Celsius) fast.
Lighting
Not a core element but a more modern element of this German sauna ritual, Sauna meisters will incorporate lighting to enhance the multi-sensory experience and create an ambiance.
Essential Oils
Another core element of Aufguss, essential oils are mixed into the water or snowballs and poured over the hot stones for an aromatherapy experience.
Water and Ice
Sauna Masters will use water and/or infused snowballs to create steam to heat the sauna. Sometimes they will hand snowballs to the sauna goers as a cooling mechanism.
Music
Music is chosen by the sauna meister to create an atmosphere; help tell a story and contribute to the multi-sensory experience.
Dance
The towel-waving is choreographed and sometimes the saunameisters (or multiple saunameisters) perform a choreographed dance.
Towel Waving
At the very core of Aufguss is towel-waving. This is a technique used to distribute the hot-scented steam around the sauna. This increases the temperature in the sauna, helping it reach those hot temps up to 200+.
Storytelling
Sometimes the sauna is used as a place to tell stories. Sharing stories is an ancient oral tradition to pass down wisdom and lessons. Sometimes the Aufguss storytelling serves this purpose and resonates on a deep and spiritual level. Other times they can be fun and light-hearted.
Benefits

Any sauna practice comes with many benefits.

When the body heats pores open and release toxins to detoxify and cleanse the body. The high temps and sweat accompanied by breathwork can activate parasympathetic thermoregulation and stimulate a deep state of relaxation. High temps also help strengthen the immune system by putting the body in a feverish state for a short time. Some studies show that sauna practices can increase longevity and reduce the chance of some diseases. The introduction of aromatherapy using essential oils can also impact relaxation, emotion, and energy. The lights and music enhance the experience by matching the rhythm of the towel-waving and yielding a sense of awe, inspiration, and transcendence. The community aspect of Aufguss is a big part of this ritual and strong community ties tend to correlate with social health and longevity. All the elements combined can stimulate cathartic, meditative, invigorated, relaxed, and joyful feelings.
Useful information

Useful information

Your unique wellness experience awaits you! Before you get ready to join us at Bedo, here are some recommendations to gain the most from Sauna.

1

Please bring two towels and warm, loose comfortable clothing. One towel for sitting on and one towel to dry your body with.  Dry clothes and warm hat & robe/coat in the winter months.

2

Please bring drinking water and snacks, a flask of hot herbal tea is always a welcomed addition to your experience in the colder months.

5

Please keep our sauna clean and tidy, wash your feet before entering and strictly no shoes inside.

3

There are cold showers to use before, during and after your sauna experience. We have a small changing area and toilets onsite but suggest you come ready with swimming gear on to get maximum Sauna time.

4

Please listen to your body and leave the sauna immediately if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. If this is your first time in a traditional Finnish sauna 3-5 minutes at a time is advised. Listen to your body and relax.

6

When pouring water onto the stones please use fresh water only that will be provided for you in the sauna bucket, pour slowly as the heat can be intense. Small ladles every 3 – 5 mins is advised.  Pouring too much water will result in the water cooling off the rocks quickly, thus reducing the heat in the sauna and influencing your experience.

7

The fire is not to be touched, please refrain from adjusting any vents or lifting the door of the stove as this can fill the heat room with smoke and make for an unpleasant experience.

Enjoy yourself …
All people are created equal but no more so than in a Sauna!
